A few years ago, we realised that if we wanted to be truly sustainable, the events industry needed to drastically change. Alongside some other initiatives, we decided to begin developing a sustainable, solar-powered method of providing power to events, without the need for polluting diesel generators. The result was SolCell, a system of solar arrays and battery products that allow us to deliver clean energy to even the most remote of locations.
How does it work?
SolCell racks are stored adjacent to our commercial solar farms. They are charged over a number of days to fill their capacity, so that when they leave our premises they are ready to provide clean, sustainable power. Once on site they can provide 48V or 240V power, using switchable inverter systems. They can also be set up in ‘live use’ mode, whereby solar panels are erected on site to harness the solar power available. This powers the connected equipment, and also often provides excess power to charge the rack, which can then be used if the sun goes away.
What happens at night or when it’s cloudy?
One of the first questions that people ask, this is a valid concern. This is why all SolCell products contain high capacity battery arrays that can store large amounts of power in reserve, so there is no break in power delivery. Something that traditional diesel generators can’t do!
What can SolCell power?
Anything that can be powered by mains electricity can be powered from SolCell. Our standard MR-7-VLA rack provides 7000 Watts of continuous power. This is enough for 1500 LED lights! We are also currently developing a 200kW system. Racks can also be connected in parallel to deliver more power or a longer run time. So far we have run festival stages, private parties, and outdoor demonstrations without running out of juice.
What happens if the power does run out?
This rarely happens if the system is designed correctly, however all SolCell products do have a mains input, so that a backup mains supply can be connected if needed.
Aren’t battery products bad for the environment?
There is a lot of debate over the extent to which batteries are reusable and the extent to which they can damage the environment. The good thing about SolCell is that all of the batteries are sourced from industrial critical backup power supplies. These batteries have to be replaced regularly as a standard procedure, regardless of whether they have ever been used. As a result, SolCell is preventing batteries needlessly being disposed of, and does not require any new batteries to be manufactured. When they have finished their life cycle within SolCell (after many years) they will be installed in our solar farms to collect any excess energy. Whilst the energy stored by the batteries at this stage will not be 100% efficient, it is still better for the environment than purchasing more brand new batteries!
How reliable is SolCell?
All SolCell systems are tested extensively in real-world scenarios. Each system contains multiple cells creating 48v arrays, with multiple arrays wired in parallel to ensure that should one fail, another is able to take its place with no gap in power delivery.
Sounds great! I’d like to use SolCell for my event.
SolCell is now a separate entity to SXS Events - you can learn more here. However SXS are still the sole supplier in the UK, so you can get in touch with us here and we can help. We are also offering SolCell for free to certain charitable/sustainable causes. Give us a call or email to find out more.
